Transforming vehicle donations into vital community resources for Fort Myers

Our mission, our story, and why this work matters locally.

How we started

Sunshine Shift was born out of a simple yet profound observation: many of our neighbors in Fort Myers were eligible for vital assistance programs yet remained unenrolled. As a passionate community member, I saw firsthand the struggles families faced in accessing benefits like SNAP and Florida Medicaid. Motivated by a vision of a better-connected community, we launched Sunshine Shift to bridge this gap.

To sustain our mission, we decided to adopt a vehicle donation model. With the wide variety of vehicles in our vibrant community, we knew we could turn cars into cash to fund our benefits-research service. This initiative not only supports those in need but also reinforces our community's spirit, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Our mission

At Sunshine Shift, our mission is to empower the residents of Fort Myers by connecting them with essential resources and benefits. We focus on programs such as Florida Medicaid, SNAP, Temporary Cash Assistance, WIC, LIHEAP, and Florida KidCare. Through our unique vehicle-donation funding model, we aim to amplify awareness and enrollment in these vital services, creating a more informed, supported, and resilient community.

Our principles

Why this city

Fort Myers is a vibrant city with diverse neighborhoods like Dunbar, East Fort Myers, and the historic River District. However, many of our local families are unaware of the benefits available to them. Data shows that certain demographics—particularly low-income households and single-parent families—face significant enrollment gaps in programs like SNAP and WIC. By focusing our efforts here, we are dedicated to addressing these gaps, fostering a community where everyone has access to the resources they deserve.
